Michael Anderson, OBE, FRSE, FBA (born 21 February 1942)[1] is an economic historian and retired academic.
Born in 1942, Anderson attended Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating in 1964 and then completing a PhD five years later.
[1] He joined the University of Edinburgh in 1967 as an assistant lecturer and was promoted to a full lectureship in 1969[1] and a readership in sociology in 1975.
[2] Outside of academia, he was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Scotland from 2000 to 2012.
[3] He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh (2007)[4] and the University of Leicester (2014),[5] and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1999 Birthday Honours "for services to educationalism".
