It is the church for the Mo parish which is part of the Indre Nordmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre.
The red, wooden church was built in the rare Y-shaped design in 1728 using plans drawn up by the architect Erik Jakobsen Holten.
[1][2] The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to 1589, but it was not new that year.
Possible burial mounds from the Viking Age dating back to around the year 1000 are located near the church.
Of the two western wings, the northern one was originally seating for females (and the baptismal sacristy is attached to that wind) and the southern one was seating for men and the church porch was at the end of that wing.
