Modesto Alex "Mitch" Maidique (pronounced /maɪdiːkɛ/; born March 20, 1940) is a Cuban-American electrical engineer, businessman, and educator.
In 2006, Maidique had a dispute with long-time University supporter Herbert Wertheim over the naming of the medical school building, which resulted in the revocation of a $20 million donation.
However, Wertheim wanted to pay the donation over a period of months, and Maidique insisted that it would have to be paid in a lump sum in order for the school to get crucial matching funds from the state.
[citation needed] As a supporter of Fulgencio Batista, Maidique chose to leave Cuba after Fidel Castro overthrew the regime.
Maidique later served on the United States Secretary of Energy Advisory Board and is a member of the Presidential Scholars Commission.
[dubious – discuss] He is a contributing author to ten books,[citation needed] and a co-author of Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation.
[citation needed] Maidique is a Phi Beta Kappa FIU alumni,[dubious – discuss] and has two children, Ana Teresa and Mark Alex.
