The most famous painters of the Molse School were Jakob Smits and Dirk Baksteen who lived in Achterbos, a hamlet of Mol.
[1] Based upon the Barbizon school the municipality Mol organized an international art exhibition in 1907 and invited painters from all over the world.
This exhibition was also an attempt to show the artists the beauty of Mol, its heath, the white sand flats and how the inhabitants (mostly farmers) lived.
