The college is named after Lieutenant-Colonel Monte Melkonian, a National Hero of Armenia killed in 1993 during the Battle of Aghdam, First Nagorno-Karabakh War.
[3] The school was founded in 1993 and was renamed after Monte Melkonian on July 28, 1994, following his death the previous year.
On January 27, 2013, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan transferred the administration of the college to the Ministry of Defense.
On November 21, 2017, President Serzh Sargsyan attended the opening ceremony of the new facility of the school in the town of Dilijan, in memory of the 60th anniversary of Melkonian's birth.
[9][10] The school's main facility is located in the spa town of Dilijan, containing a training center, as well as an athletics hall, where cadets can play basketball, tennis, chess, and soccer.
