Mudville is a Brooklyn, NY-based band and artist collective whose sound, a hybrid of downtempo, electronica, Memphis-style soul and jazz was dubbed, "post-trip hop" by John Donohue of The New Yorker.
Carino is known for her "serious chops",[4] sultry, limber contralto voice and expressive phrasing which is often compared to Annie Lennox,[5][6][7] Nina Simone[8] and Sarah Vaughan,[9] and for her poetic, progressive-minded prose, which has drawn comparisons to that of Radiohead and R.E.M.
The duo have recorded an EP, 2003's four-song Mudville, which featured one track, "High Rise", that was co-produced by Billy Talbot, bassist of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and two full-length recordings; 2005's The Glory of Man is Not in Vogue, which was lauded as "Enchanting... a testament to the healing powers of rhythm"[11] and "A captivating and emotionally charged album" [12] and 2007's Iris Nova, which features an eclectic array of artists, including R.E.M.
bassist Mike Mills on piano, Telecaster maestro Jim Campilongo on guitar, percussionist/producer Karsh Kale, Bob Dylan pedal-steel guitarist Buddy Cage, the Ethel string quartet and saxophonist and former Lounge Lizard Michael Blake.
American Songwriter magazine called Iris Nova "a pageantry of maturing sounds and measures, confident attitudes and different genres" and Rhapsody deemed it "a perfect melding, as if Nina Simone came back from the dead to front Morcheeba on a new record".
