Nathaniel Holmes (January 2, 1814[1] or July 2, 1814[2] or July 2, 1815[3] in Peterborough, New Hampshire— February 26[1] or March 26,[4] 1901 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) was an American jurist who served on the Supreme Court of Missouri from 1865 to 1868.
[1] He attended school in Chester, Vermont and New Ipswich, New Hampshire,[3] then was a student at Philips Exeter Academy[4] before enrolling in Harvard University in 1833.
[1] In 1846, John C. Edwards appointed him circuit attorney for St. Louis County, a position he held until 1847.
[4] In 1865, the Ousting Ordinance removed all judges in Missouri from office,[5] and Thomas Clement Fletcher appointed Holmes to fill one of the newly-vacated seats on the state Supreme Court.
[4] In 1867, the University of Missouri appointed him a Professor of Law; however, he did not teach any courses.
