He is an Australian national champion and has competed at underage and senior world championships.
[3] After making the Australian senior squad he joined the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney.
[4] In 2021 he was selected in the Victorian men's senior eight which contested and won the Kings Cup.
[10][11] In March 2022 Lavery was selected in the Australian training team to prepare for the 2022 international season and the 2022 World Rowing Championships.
[9] The eight won through their repechage to make the A final where they raced to a third place and a World Championship bronze medal.
