He was the oldest surviving son of Felix Calvert of Furneaux Pelham in Hertfordshire.
His mother Christian was the daughter of Josiah Nicolson, a brewer from Clapham.
He was educated at Bury St Edmunds Grammar School and at Trinity College, Cambridge.
