It is located in the industrial region of the Donets Basin.
After the October Revolution, it was changed to Volodarske in 1923 after V. Volodarsky, a Bolshevik.
On February 18, 2016, as part of decommunization laws, the settlement was returned to the founding name of Nikolske.
[1] The town was captured by Russia and annexed into the Donetsk People's Republic during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the occupation authorities changed its name back to Volodarske on May 4, 2022.
