Part of the township is located within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
[3] In 1964, the Sugar Loaf ski resort opened in the east of the township.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,040 people, 436 households, and 312 families residing in the township.
24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
