Oberelz

The municipality lies in the Vulkaneifel, a part of the Eifel known for its volcanic history, geographical and geological features, and even ongoing activity today, including gases that sometimes well up from the earth.

In the course of administrative restructuring in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1970, the municipality, along with the others in the Amt of Kelberg, was assigned to the Daun district, which has since been given the name Vulkaneifel.

[3][4] The council has six members, chosen by majority vote at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009, with the honorary mayor as chairman.

[1] The German blazon reads: Von Gold vor Rot durch Wellenschnitt geteilt, vorn 7 (4:3) zu 2 Balken aneinandergereihte rote Rauten, hinten 3 (1:1:1) goldene Kugeln.

The seven lozenges were borne by the Counts of Virneburg; their arms can also be seen locally at the chapel, on the vault’s keystone.
