Oneonta, Alabama

Oneonta (/ˌɒniˈɒnɒ/) is a city in Blount County, Alabama, United States.

[3] The city was named after Oneonta, New York, the native home of a railroad official.

[5] During World War II, a small POW camp was operated outside of Oneonta.

[8] As of the 2020 United States census, there were 6,938 people, 2,565 households, and 1,551 families residing in the city.

The city government is made up of Mayor Richard Phillips and a five-person city council —Judy Underwood, Sherry Pierce, Donald Bradley, Lee Alexander, and Robbie McAlpine.

Also located in Oneonta is the Blount County Memorial Museum[16] which hosts a variety of resources for genealogy research.

The Oneonta Business Association[18] sponsors the annual summertime festival known as the June Fling with over 100 booths, cruise-in, entertainment, Kidz Fun Zone, and the Singing Showdown solo vocal competition.

A new shopping center is planned to be built across from Blount County Tractor and Walmart on Alabama State Route 75; the new shopping center will feature national stores including Marshalls, Five Below, Ulta Beauty, and Rack Room Shoes, with the potential for additional stores, according to the city.

Blount County Public Transportation System provides dial-a-ride bus transit service to the city.
