The leafy stems grow up to 30 cm (12 in) long and 25–38 mm (0.98–1.50 in) thick.

Fallen leaves form circular leaf scars low on the stem.

The leaves are oblanceolate and terete, growing upwards of 5 cm (2.0 in) long.

The numerous bracts are arranged in two imbricated rows and have short pedicels.

The dark red corolla has five spreading lobes and is about 5.1 mm (0.20 in) long.
