Saigal had become addicted to alcohol and, according to medical advisors of the time, he could record only after drinking.

According to composer Naushad, he had recorded the song "Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya" for Shah Jehan (1946) after asking Saigal to sing without having alcohol, which Saigal did after some reluctance and uncertainty on his part.
