Lyman was born in Madrid, Iowa, and earned a bachelor's degree in music from Grinnell College in 1907.
[1][2][3] He was the soloist in the glee club for most of his time at Grinnell, and was subsequently known for his work with choruses.
[4] He began his career as director of the music school of Franklin Academy in Nebraska.
