Jose Tiburcio Castro (1780–1840) was also a soldier, and later civil administrator of secularized Mission San Juan Bautista.
With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican–American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored.

Leese sold 80 acres (0.3 km2) to Elias Howe, who is usually credited as the founder of Salinas, in 1856.
