During World War II, Ewers enlisted as a sapper in the Australian Imperial Force in 1941.
Upon recommendation by Bowles, he was transferred and made an official war artist with the rank of lieutenant.
From 1943 until 1958, Ewers produced 32 dioramas depicting war scenes.
His Australian Serviceman was originally placed in the Hall of Memory, where it was displayed from 1958 until 1993, when it was moved to the sculpture garden.
