After completing his studies in law, he initially worked in the Austrian nationalized industry at Alpine Mountain AG.
In 1994, Straub was appointed as the global head of IBM internal education, focusing on sales, marketing, and industry training.
He held this position until 1996 when he became the IBM Chief Learning Officer, based in White Plains and Paris.
In 2001, he transitioned into a line management role as the European head of a global innovation unit called Learning Solutions.
