He previously served as the linebackers coach for the Michigan Wolverines and as a defensive coordinator for the Birmingham Iron in the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
Minter has previously served as the head football coach at the University of Cincinnati from 1994 to 2003 and as the interim head coach for Marshall University in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, compiling a career college football record of 54–63–1.
Minter started his career as a graduate assistant coach at Henderson State University in 1977.
From 1992 to 1993, he served as the defensive coordinator for the University of Notre Dame, where he led the Irish to a #2 national ranking.
