Roberto Brenes Mesén (July 6, 1874 – May 19, 1947)[1], was a Costa Rican politician, writer, educator, and journalist.
Although he was living in the United States, in 1928 he became part of the so-called Civic League, with Carmen Lyra, Joaquín García Monge, Omar Dengo, Alfredo González Flores and José María Zeledón.
He continued writing articles for the biggest newspapers and magazines in Costa Rica promoting education.
[1] Some of his works were controversial at the time, such the argument he held with the Catholic Church over the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution in the Liceo de Heredia and mixed instruction.
He was a member of the Theosophical Society of Costa Rica, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese[1] and a freemason.
