He represented the electoral district of Inverness in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1949 to 1962.

[2] From 1937 to 1949, MacLean was a municipal councillor for Inverness County, serving from 1943 to 1949 as warden.

[4] Maclean was re-elected in the 1956,[5] and 1960 elections, serving with Liberal Joseph Clyde Nunn.
