Elected to the State Legislative Assembly in 2003 and 2012, Rohit Thakur played a crucial role as the Chief Parliamentary Secretary from May 2013 to December 2017.

He was re-elected to the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha for the third time in the by-election held on 30 October 2021.
