Today it is a titular see known as the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie in Michigan(Latin: Dioecesis Marianopolitana in Michigania).
On July 29, 1853, the Vatican established the Apostolic Vicariate of Upper Michigan.
Comprising territory from the Diocese of Detroit in northern Michigan, the vicariate was headquartered in Sault Ste.
[2] The Vatican elevated the apostolic vicariate on January 9, 1857, to the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie.
On October 23, 1865, the vicariate was renamed the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie-Marquette and the Vatican named the Venerable Frederic Baraga as its first bishop.
