[4] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.5 km2 (4.8 mi2), of which 10.6 km2 (4.1 mi2) is land and 1.9 km2 (0.7 mi2) (15.11%) is water.

As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 5,069 people, 2,055 households, and 1,383 families residing in the CDP.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.76% White, 1.03% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 1.32% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races.

There were 2,055 households, out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families.

28.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
