Tahlequah, the Cherokee County seat, is 11 miles (18 km) to the southeast.

Hulbert, the closest town, is 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the western edge of Shady Grove and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southwest of the Shady Grove School.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.6 square miles (32.6 km2), all land.
