It was established in August 2018 to provide specialized handling of finance related cases.

[1] During the national "two session" period in 2018, Lu Hongbing, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Committee, and Shanghai International Studies University Associate Professor Huang Wei and others resubmitted the "Proposal on the Establishment of Shanghai Financial Court".

The meeting reviewed and approved the "Proposal on the Establishment of Shanghai Financial Court".

[3] On April 27, 2018, The Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress passed the "Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on the Establishment of the Shanghai Financial Court" in effect from April 28, 2018 deciding to set up the Shanghai Financial Court.
