The party was founded by former Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah in 2006.
Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, a former deputy speaker of the Sindh Assembly, laid the foundation of the party.
On 3 November 2007, the dictator, Pervez Musharraf, imposed an emergency and suspended the 1973 constitution of the country.
The party has a firm belief in the power of nonviolence and has been the strongest advocate of religious harmony and separation of religion and state on account of its very foundations.
In 2015, the SUP decided to launch a mass mobilisation and awareness campaign after Eid al-Fitr against terrorism, religious extremism and corruption in Sindh.
