According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20 km2), all land.

As of the 2000 United States Census,[3] there were 448 people in the town, organized into 149 households and 119 families.

14.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

Out of the total population, 32.2% of those under the age of 18 and 23.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The contest, held on the first Saturday in September, was inaugurated in order to revive the almost-lost art of "hollerin", a sophisticated vocal tradition that served as a means of long-distance communication between individuals as well as an amusing form of entertainment, before the widespread adoption of the telephone.
