St. Nicholas Church, Bratislava

The church was torn down in 1526 together with many other sacral buildings outside of the Bratislava city walls in preparation of a Turkish siege.

During the reign of Maria Theresa, in accordance with new rules about handling of the deceased a crypt was constructed underneath the church.

The crypt is accessible by a narrow staircase from a small extension building built against the southern wall of the church and it was later vandalized.

After Podhradie was assimilated into Bratislava, the church was administrated by the Catholic funeral society of St. Nicholas (Slovak: Katolícky pohrebný spolok sv.

Visible problems were compounded by a lightning strike in June 1966 and by repeated vandalism by the local youth.
