The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1979, for its significance in architecture and religion.

In 1868, Bishop Bayley designated the community a parish and appointed a pastor, and a church and school were built on Prospect Street.

[4] Construction on the current church on Washington, State and Ann Streets began in 1885 and was completed around 1889.

It was designed by architect William Schickel with High Victorian Gothic style.

According to the nomination form, it is "one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture" in the city.
