As a businessman and investor, he was a founder, chief executive officer or director of more than 40 companies in the United States, West Indies, and Mexico.

During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater, and flew more than 50 combat missions, receiving two awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross[3] and eight Air Medals.
