The unincorporated communities of Purdy, Retreat, and West Prairie are located in the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.5 square miles (117.7 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the town was 99.44% White, 0.14% African American, 0.14% Asian, and 0.28% from two or more races.
