[citation needed] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which 2.3 square miles (5.9 km2) is land and 0.43% is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 1,980 people, 926 households, and 726 families residing in the town.

Since 1930, Sterlington has been home to ANGUS Chemical Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company, provides approximately 204 full-time and contract jobs to the area.
