The city is home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sunyani which is under the bishop of Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
[4] Historically, Sunyani was a popular camping ground for elephant hunters during the late 19th century.
In 1924, the British set up a district headquarters in the city and with the construction of a road between it and Kumasi, Sunyani became an economic hub.
