Suriname national badminton team

The first Surinamese national squad was formed in 1970 when a badminton team from Trinidad & Tobago visited Suriname.

The Surinamese players of the first national squad in 1970 included players Romeo Caster, Theo Bueno de Mesquita, Artie Heuvel, Frits Terborg, Reginald Ching Jong, Otmar Kersout, Walther Illes and the ladies Lilian Bendter, Maria Ho, Johanna Asin and Cornelly da Silva.

The team beat Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana but lost against hosts Jamaica to finish in second place.

The team lost to Canada and Jamaica but won against Trinidad and Tobago to finish third in the group.

The team lost 5–0 to Jamaica and 3–2 to Turkey but defeated the Faroe Islands 3–2 to finish in 49th place on the overall rankings.
