Katie Ledecky, from the United States, was named "female swimmer of the meet" after setting two world records and winning four gold medals.

Among men, Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz of America, Ian Thorpe of Australia all won at least six golds in a single World Championships or Olympics.

In the 4x100-metre medley relay, the United States appeared to finish first by a wide margin but was disqualified because a swimmer left the platform too early.
