The district, located in the Downriver area southwest of Detroit, has a territory of 25 square miles (65 km2).
The district serves Taylor and portions of Brownstown, Dearborn Heights, Inkster, and Westland.
As of 2014 it is the largest governmental unit in the Downriver area and the fifth-largest school district in Wayne County.
