It is administered by the Thames-Coromandel District Council, which has its seat in the town of Thames.
The district lies within the Waikato Regional Council area.
The results were 88.4% European (Pākehā); 18.8% Māori; 2.5% Pasifika; 3.6% Asian; 0.6% Middle Eastern, Latin American and African New Zealanders (MELAA); and 2.5% other, which includes people giving their ethnicity as "New Zealander".
Of those at least 15 years old, 3,582 (13.0%) people had a bachelor's or higher degree, 15,453 (55.9%) had a post-high school certificate or diploma, and 7,461 (27.0%) people exclusively held high school qualifications.
