The Miracle of Our Lady of the Snows

The Miracle of Our Lady of the Snows is an oil on wood painting by German artist Matthias Grünewald, created in 1517-1519, originally intended for the collegiate church in Aschaffenburg.

[1] Grünewald's painting was the right wing of the Altar of Our Lady of the Snows in the collegiate church in Aschaffenburg.

[2][3] The Miracle of Our Lady of the Snows represents the legendary origins of the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

One night, Pope Liberius and one of the Roman patricians had an identical dream in which Our Lady ordered a church to be erected in a place where snow would fall in the middle of Summer.

On the left side of Grünewald's painting it is depicted the papal palace with the sleeping pope.
