The ministry was formed in the aftermath of the victory of the United Democratic Front in the 1982 assembly elections.

Mohammed Koya was sworn as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state, a post he continued to hold until his untimely demise on 28 September 1983.

Fellow party leader K. Avukaderkutty Naha was sworn in as the 3rd (and as of now the last) Deputy Chief Minister on 24 October 1983 and held the post until the dissolution of the ministry.
