He was in the past sometimes erroneously referred to as Frederik Hendrik Mans, likely because he signed his name "THMANS" with the "THM" together, leading dealers to assume his name was F.H.
The artist then married Sibilla Juriaensdr., a woman from Marck county in Germany, with whom he had a son, Gijsbert.

His style was rather influenced by Klaes Molenaer particularly in his depiction of winter landscapes and river scenes.
One of his collaborators was Abraham Storck, who painted the figures in the Winter landscape with the Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam (Christie's New York sale of 14 April 2016, lot 247).
