Thomas J. Anderson (judge)

Thomas J. Anderson (March 4, 1837 – April 13, 1910) was a justice of the Territorial Utah Supreme Court from 1889 to 1893.

While working as a school teacher, he read law to gain admission to the bar in 1860, and began practicing in Knoxville, Iowa.

[1] At various points in the 1870s and 1880s, he ran for judicial, legislative, and executive positions, including being the Democratic nominee for governor in the 1887 Iowa gubernatorial election, and for the United States Senate in the 1888 United States Senate election in Iowa.

In November 1889, Anderson denied citizenship applications sought by a number of immigrants to the United States "simply because they were members of the Mormon church", a controversial decision.

[1] Anderson remained in Utah until 1906, when he went to live in the Soldier's Home in Sawtelle, California, where he died at the age of 73.
