Tirano (RFI) is situated at the southern side of Piazzale Stazione (Station Square) within the town centre.
The station was opened on 29 June 1902, upon the inauguration of the Alta Valtellina (Upper Tellina Valley) railway.
Upon nationalisation of the Italian railways on 1 July 1905, the Alta Valtellina line remained in private ownership.
The Ferrovie della Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned railway operator, did not assume ownership of the line until 1970.
There is also an area used by rail heritage group ALe 883 for restoring locomotives.
