It is found in Costa Rica and western Panama.

Its natural habitats are tropical moist forests and plantations from the lowlands into lower mountain regions.

The species is found solitary or in couples, mostly in the San Vito area, and as far north as Carara National Park.

Typically a rather elusive bird, it follows fruit phenology.

Sightings have been reported at La Amistad Lodge, Las Mellizas-San Vito, and the Pacifico Lodge area close to Carara National Park.
