Born in Los Angeles in a Cuban and black household, she studied comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

She began her work in television as a writers' assistant and occasional writer on Los Beltrán, a Telemundo sitcom.

After sending a spec script, she worked for six years on The Simpsons and then on Bordertown.

[1] She later worked on The CW's Jane the Virgin; the network rejected her proposed spin-off show in 2019.

[2] Garza wrote The Simpsons episodes "Loan-a Lisa" and "Four Great Women and a Manicure".
