Geoffrey's half-sister was wife to one of Eleanor of Provence's uncles, Peter of Savoy, earl of Richmond.

Geoffrey was thus one of the "Savoyards" who arrived in England in the retinue of Eleanor at the time of her marriage to King Henry III in 1236.

The 42nd "Rainbow" Infantry Division (United States) was temporarily located here, initially under the command of MG William A. Mann from November 1 - December 18 of 1917, to preliminarily train before transferring to an area between Lafauche and Rimaucourt during the initial stages of direct United States military, ground forces involvement in World War I.
