She defeated Brishin Patel of Janata Dal (United), or JD(U), in 2000 in the Bihar Legislative Assembly election at Vaishali.
She is the widow of Hemant Kumar Shahi (son of veteran Indian National Congress party leader Laliteshwar Prasad Shahi).
