Papua New Guinea requires its residents to register their motor vehicles and display vehicle registration plates.

Special number plates are issued to Consular staff, Diplomatic staff, Government owned vehicles, motorcycles, public motor vehicles (buses), taxis, trailers and to those engaged in selling or repairing vehicles.
