Arne Anders Vilhem Helander (8 February 1941 – 19 January 2025) was a Finnish architect and Professor of architectural history at Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland from 1986 until 2005, when he became professor emeritus.
Helander first came to public prominence with the polemical book Kenen Helsinki?
In many cases, the historic facades were preserved and new buildings with denser areas were built behind them.
One of the main examples was the development of the neoclassical Helsinki City Hall being vastly modified by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori.
In November 2024 Helander followed Alvar Aalto, Reima Pietilä and Juha Leiviskä in becoming the architecture member of the Academy of Finland – thus bestowing on him the honorary title of Akateemikko (Academician).
